School of Chemical Sciences
Welcome from the Head of School
Chemistry is central to the understanding of the processes and the production of molecules and materials essential to modern life. It sits at the cross-roads between disciplines such as medicine, nutrition, forensics, energy, environmental and materials science.
Future developments and advances in our understanding of these areas will enrich our lives and provide employment opportunities for graduates who have a sound understanding of the chemistry involved.
The School of Chemical Sciences at The University of Auckland is the largest university chemistry school in the country. It offers a comprehensive range of courses in pure and applied Chemistry, and hosts programmes in Medicinal Chemistry, Forensic Science, Food Science and Wine Science. Thus Chemical Sciences courses may be taken as part of a Chemistry major or as part of another degree or programme in which Chemistry is a desirable or essential component.
We are very active in research, with over 30 academics involved in fundamental or applied research programmes, often in collaboration with other disciplines within the University including Biological Sciences, Physics, Engineering, and Medicine. Many of these programmes also involve New Zealand and overseas industries. Our postgraduate programme currently involves over 180 students including more than 100 PhDs who participate in our research effort and contribute to the advancement of chemical knowledge. Our research greatly enhances our teaching programmes, you can expect to be taught by academics who are leading researchers in their fields.
The School of Chemical Sciences website describes the full range of courses offered by the school, together with information to assist you in planning your degree programme. On behalf of all members of the school I am very pleased to welcome you and to wish you enjoyment and success in your studies.
