About the school

The chemical sciences are central to understanding the molecules and materials essential to modern life.

The School of Chemical Sciences teaches and performs research in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, green chemical science, food science and nutrition, forensic science, and wine science, which makes for a remarkably stimulating and diverse intellectual environment. Our teaching and research is also strongly linked to many other disciplines such as medicine, nutrition, forensics, energy, sustainability, environmental and materials science.

We are united by our desire to identify the substances of which matter is composed; to understand how they interact, combine, and change; and to create new compounds and materials, to benefit Aotearoa New Zealand and address global challenges. Training in the skills of identifying, measuring, creating and manipulating matter provides many exciting employment opportunities for our graduates, giving them a sound understanding of the fundamental knowledge of matter and the practical skills to use this knowledge.

We have a large number of academics involved in our teaching and research, and are strongly connected to both national and international collaborations, research centres and industries

Professor Duncan McGillivray Head of the School of Chemical Sciences

We have a large number of academics involved in our teaching and research, and are strongly connected to both national and international collaborations, research centres and industries. Our research enhances our teaching programmes - our strong commitment to research ensures that our teaching is up-to-date, and our undergraduate and postgraduate students are taught by academics who are leading scholars in their fields. Our postgraduate students work with these leading scholars in their research and are at the forefront of advancing scientific knowledge. We also maintain extensive modern instrument facilities that are used in support of our teaching and research.

If you are a current or prospective student, our website describes the activities of the school, including the full range of courses offered, together with information to assist you in planning your degree programmes. If you have any questions about our programmes, I encourage you to contact one of our advisers to find out more.
